Density:
The density is generally about 7.93g/cm³, which is slightly higher than ordinary carbon steel. This makes 304 stainless steel coils suitable for lightweight yet strong structural applications.
Melting point:
The melting point is relatively high, generally around 1400-1450℃. This feature ensures that 304 stainless steel coils maintain excellent stability in high-temperature environments.
Coefficient of thermal expansion:
The coefficient of thermal expansion is relatively small. In the range of room temperature to 100℃, the coefficient of thermal expansion of 304 stainless steel is about 17.2×10⁻⁶/℃. This characteristic enables 304 stainless steel coils to maintain good dimensional stability in environments with significant temperature fluctuations.
Thermal conductivity:
The thermal conductivity is poor, with a thermal conductivity coefficient of about 16 – 27W/(m・K), which is much lower than that of copper, aluminum, and other metals. As a result, 304 stainless steel coils exhibit certain thermal insulation properties.
Electrical conductivity:
It has certain electrical conductivity, but the conductivity is relatively low. The conductivity of 304 stainless steel is about 1.4×10⁶ S/m, which is only about 4% of the conductivity of copper.
Corrosion resistance:
This is one of the most important chemical properties of 304 stainless steel coils. A dense passivation film forms on its surface, preventing oxygen, water, and other corrosive agents from contacting the metal matrix, thereby effectively preventing corrosion. For example, 304 stainless steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in environments such as the atmosphere, water, and weak acids and alkalis. It is widely used in applications requiring resistance to rust and chemical damage.
Antioxidation:
304 stainless steel coils have good oxidation resistance at both room temperature and higher temperatures. This makes them suitable for use in environments where they may be exposed to heat or harsh conditions without significant degradation.
Chemical stability:
In general chemical media, 304 stainless steel coils exhibit high chemical stability and are not prone to reacting chemically with common chemicals. However, in some specific strong corrosive media, such as concentrated nitric acid or hydrofluoric acid, the corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel may be affected.
Passivation:
After exposure to air or undergoing passivation treatment, a passivation film forms on the surface of 304 stainless steel coils. This passivation film enhances the material’s corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Passivation treatment typically involves immersing the stainless steel coil in a solution containing an oxidant, such as nitric acid or potassium dichromate, to promote the formation and repair of the passivation film.
