Physical Properties

Appearance:
It typically presents a silvery-gray metallic color with a smooth, uniform surface due to the zinc coating. The galvanized layer provides excellent corrosion resistance and a bright, reflective appearance. Different surface finishes, such as matte or glossy, can be achieved through specific production processes.

Density:
The density of DX52D+Z galvanized steel sheet is approximately 7.85 g/cm³ , similar to plain carbon steel. The additional zinc coating slightly increases the overall weight but does not significantly alter the density.

Melting Point:
The melting point of the base steel is around 1370-1510°C , depending on the alloy composition. However, the zinc coating melts at a much lower temperature (419.5°C ), which must be considered during high-temperature applications.

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:
The coefficient of thermal expansion is relatively low, around 11-13 × 10⁻⁶/°C at room temperature. This ensures good dimensional stability in environments with fluctuating temperatures.

Thermal Conductivity:
The thermal conductivity is moderate, approximately 50-60 W/(m·K) for the steel substrate, while the zinc coating has a slightly lower thermal conductivity. This combination makes it suitable for applications requiring heat dissipation.

Electrical Conductivity:
Electrical conductivity is relatively low compared to pure metals like copper, typically around 10% of copper’s conductivity . It is unsuitable for high-current electrical applications.

Chemical Properties

Corrosion Resistance:
The zinc coating provides excellent corrosion resistance by forming a protective barrier on the steel surface. The zinc layer sacrifices itself to prevent rusting of the underlying steel through a process called cathodic protection. DX52D+Z is particularly effective in outdoor and humid environments, making it ideal for roofing, cladding, and structural applications.

Antioxidation:
At high temperatures, the zinc coating oxidizes to form a stable zinc oxide layer, which further enhances corrosion resistance. However, prolonged exposure to temperatures above 200°C can cause the zinc layer to peel or degrade, reducing its protective properties.

Chemical Stability:
The zinc coating is highly resistant to weak acids, alkalis, and atmospheric corrosion. However, in strong acidic or alkaline environments (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid), the zinc layer may dissolve, compromising the steel’s protection.

Passivation:

The zinc coating naturally forms a thin passivation layer when exposed to air, enhancing its corrosion resistance. Additional treatments, such as chromate passivation, can further improve the durability and longevity of the zinc layer.
